...and the MLB regular season ends, sadly...plus Postseason Predictions

It was another disappointing year for the Tribe.  I don't know what to really say as I can't say I saw much progress for the 2011 season.  They have talent, but they just need to learn how to put it together.  I'll touch on thier 2011 campaign next year when more is available...

Conversely for the Astros, they finished the year strong and have shown much to look forward to next year.  If they can make a few moves I think they have a shot at contending...

SO...back in April I made some big predictions...copied here:
Regular Season:
NL
Central - Cardinals (100-62)
East - Phillies (98-64)
West - Rockies (84-78)
Wild Card - Reds (88-74)
AL
Central - White Sox (94-68)
East - Rays (91-72)
West - Mariners (94-66)
Wild Card - Yankees (90-73)

Division Series:
NLDS: Rockies over Cardinals, Reds over Phillies
ALDS: White Sox over Yankees, Rays over Mariners

Championship Series:
NLCS: Reds over Rockies
ALCS: Rays over White Sox

World Series:
Rays over Rockies in 7 games...

Obviously they all can't work out.  The Mariners disappointed, as did the White Sox.  Rocktober didn't happen for the Rockies...  And those Cardinals just slumped down the stretch.  I was 4 for 8...so don't start taking my advice to Vegas!

But as it's baseball, here goes for the postseason:
NLDS: Phillies over Reds, Braves over Giants
NLCS: Braves over Phillies
ALDS: Rangers over Rays, Twins over Yankees
ALCS: Twins over Braves
World Series: Braves win in 6!

If this all works out...I can think of a whole lot of people that would be disappointed...especially my mom, one of the biggest anti-Braves fans out there!

Tribe all the way in 2011!!!

A Fan's Dream, MLB Hall of Fame in Cooperstown!

First off, Congratulations to Megan and Helen!  Their wedding was awesome and we had a wonderful time.  We wish them many years of happiness to come!  It was a great weekend in upstate New York!

An obvious highlight (taking nothing from the wedding, of course) was the MLB Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.  When Debbie and I were discussing our Fall plans and the numerous weddings, travels, and holidays, we figured our time was all booked up.  I should have been more aware of the proximity of Cooperstown to Albany and Syracuse (where we flew into, and were the wedding was)...but I give all the credit to Deb for suggesting "why don't we go to Cooperstown?"  WOW, what a wife!  And we made it happen...
Cheryl and Calvin joined us for the day, which made it fun!
It was baseball immortality there, seeing how the game came to be, how it has evolved, the historic artifacts, photos, memorabilia, etc etc etc.  It was baseball overload, and it was awesome!!
Read the caption...wouldn't be okay now!
I'll admit, there was a lot of Yankees stuff there, which I was not too fond of...but I have to remember, there have been some amazing players in history that have been Yankees.  I admire their careers and their accomplishments, but I still consider myself a Yankee-hater!  Sorry folks.

I liked this display with Ted Williams hitting zones, that he put together, I was actually fascinated with this...Red is where he hit the best, blue not as well...
The women in baseball section was there, just like in A League of Their Own, including giveaways in Cleveland (!!!) from years back...aprons!
The movie debate was guys versus girls...The guys say Major League was the best, girls said A League of Their Own.  Granted both were good movies, you have to defer to the Indians winning it all in the ML movie!

The plaque room was awesome...seeing all the history there and realizing how many have played the game with such honor was amazing.
We even saw current memorabilia from historic moments this year...perfect games, no hitters, and more.  Plus we saw Barry Bonds' "asterik" baseball from his record-breaking home run.
Debbie's Cardinals...a locker full of modern-day memorabilia...
Greatest team ever, the Indians!  WOOHOO!  We will win again soon, 1948 was a looooong time ago!
It was a great great day!  Can't wait to go back with the little Kadlec's...after they are born and of course get older!  Haha.

Baseball Rules!!!

Syracuse and Apple Picking

Terence and I went to Syracuse over Labor Day weekend for Megan Helen's wedding. It was so great to get to see everyone! AND to enjoy the cold weather!!

We decided to go apple picking the morning of the wedding while everyone was getting ready. So Leslie, Calvin, Terence, and I decided to head to Beak and Skiff which also has a winery and a vodka distillery.

They had tractors to take everyone out to the apple orchard and handed out bags and ladders for everyone to get their own apples. We were able to pick JonaMac apples (and get all the flavors we wanted back at the general store).

After picking our apples we headed back and picked up some apple cider (delicious) and the best apple cider donuts ever! Afterwards we headed to the apple winery and the apple vodka distillery....and then we were apple'd out!

The wedding took place later that night, it was a beautiful outdoor ceremony and a nice lodge setting for the reception.

Congrats to the happy couple!

The next day we headed down to Cooperstown for the Baseball Hall of Fame...I'll let Terence talk about that cause I was just the photographer!

Next up...Outer Banks, North Carolina for Krna's wedding!

Cooperstown to save the 2010 MLB Season for me!

It's another disappointing year for me with my baseball teams...I'm really starting to feel like a Cubs fan, always saying "this is the year," then seeing the team faulter and fall out of the race.

I won't say it's impossible, but it's unlikely, that either the Indians or Astros make it anywhere this season.  Cleveland is keeping the AL Central cellar warm, while Houston is doing just barely enough to stay in front of the Pirates.  Pittsburgh is en route to it's 18th straight, and MLB record, losing season...it's not that bad for me yet, but it's not good either... Cleveland is sitting at 41-57, while Houston is at 40-58!  If they went on to win their next 64 games, they'd be okay, probably win their divisions.  At this point, I say blow the teams up!

Similar to an earlier posting this year, trade your chips away...bring in young talent and build for the future...  Houston is old and overpaid, so take what you can get... Get out from your big contracts, dump your worthless schmucks, and bring up the mediocre talent that's in the minors.  Cleveland needs a kick start to remind them they are not that bad!

Anyways, as crappy as the 2010 baseball season has been for me, I'm no less of a fan...always love the game.  I think I'm addicted to baseball news more than ever, if you can believe it.  MLBtraderumors.com is my outlet for reading, with MLB.com and ESPN.com/MLB now a distant second and third.

And to top it all off, we are going to Cooperstown this year!  We weddings in the fall to attend, with the first over Labor Day weekend in Syracuse, NY.  We strategically decided to book our flights through Albany so we can take a day and spend it with Baseball immortals!  Debbie thought of taking the extra day to go there, not me...she never ceases to amaze me.  It's hard enough sitting through baseball games in Houston, it's another thing to spend a day with me oggling baseball history!  Can't wait!
Another thing I can't wait for...2011...it's gonna be the year for the Tribe!  :-)

NYC

Terence and I just got back from New York City. For Terence's birthday I had bought tickets to the Yankee/Indians game over Memorial Day weekend. I think this was the only time I wish I had bought worse seats! We went to the day game on Monday and it was nice and sunny, which is great, but not when your sitting in the direct sun on leather seats for 2+ hours! We ended up buying some sunscreen and frozen margaritas and sweat it out in our Indians gear surrounded by Yankee fans. The stadium was nice though, name brand vendors everywhere including Nathan's hotdogs!

Besides the game, we did a few touristy things, we took a ride up to the Top of the Rock to see the beautiful skyline of NYC. It was fun, got some good pics and wish I had my new camera to practice with!

Besides the new BOA tower, a few other things had definitely changed since we moved to Texas. Times Square is completely open now for pedestrian traffic only and they added all sorts of cafe tables and chairs outside.

We also saw some movie stars! They were taping some scenes from the "The Smurfs" movie with Neill Patrick Harris walking down 59th street near Central Park. It was obviously meant for the fall as they had fake leaves and blowers everywhere. We also saw the cast of Glee outside Radio City Music Hall.

And most importantly, we ate! We ate lots of cupcakes, italian, and brunch. We went to my favorite restaurant, Serendipity 3 and shared an ice cream sundae (not the $1000 one). We visited an old Italian restaurant we remembered near Greenwich Village, Foccaria, and got to meet up with Terence's old friend, Alok. We also went to a new Italian place near Times Square, Trattoria Trecolori, highly recommend as it was delish! We missed out on our old brunch place, Clinton Street Baking Co., but made up for it by eating at Sarabeth's on the West side the next day. We tried to hit the best cupcakes in town: Butter Lane, Crumbs, Magnolia Bakery, and Eleni's (a new place in Chelsea Market). The "Elvis" cupcake at Butter Lane being my fav and the "Grasshopper" at Crumbs being Terence's fav. All in all, it was a good trip!

And while we were gone, somebody had a baby! Congrats to Timothy Kadlec Jr. born May 31st 7 lbs 12.5 oz and 20 inches.

BULL! The Indians are NOT the most hated MLB team!

I'm going to go on my soapbox here on the blog and defend my favorite team, the Cleveland Indians.

According to an ESPN article, a Neilson formula ("Sentiment Ratings"), the Indians are the most hated...BULL! I have lived in three places...Florida, NY, and Texas...all of which are very different, very different baseball markets, culture, people, and politics (won't go there!!). I can say that FL, or NY South, was just like NY...you either love the Yankees or hate them. As for Texas, I think most people just hate NY in general...

Not that this is a Yankee-bashing affair, but in reality, the Yankees have got to be the most hated. Yes, as an Indians fan, there are struggles supporting a team that often appears to be going nowhere, but come on, they are definitely not the most hated.

Wanna read the article, go here: INDIANS RULE, YANKEES SUCK!

Another funny part of the article, the Astros were 4th on the list. I'm shocked by this too, but I'll be loyal to my most-favored team first!

I'll concede this opinion if, and only if, the Indians win the World Series this year. Pshh, who cares if you are the most hated, it's the championship! 1995 and 1997 were so close. It's been so long since 1948...I just don't want to become like a Cubs fan (another team that should be at the top of the list...but then again, they did have Harry Carey, who could hate that guy?!)

UPDATE: Check out this link to baseball-fever.com...where they had a poll, approximately 75% of people hate who? The Yankees!

Foul Ball! Thank you old man Jamie Moyer!

It took me years and years of attending baseball games, but I finally did it...I caught a foul ball!!!

Saturday Deb made it "second birthday" of sorts making me eggs benedict for breakfast, followed by a tour of Minute Maid Park, then an Astros-Phillies game.

The tour was cool, seeing so much of the stadium, sitting down where the former President sits, and just exploring the history of the stadium...awesome. Totally worth it.

Then, the game. 7th row from the field, right behind third base...

It was Felipe Paulino pitching for the Astros...he throws hard and wild...there were an abundance of foul balls and I always think, "this is the game." Foul ball after foul ball, one of these times...I joked with Debbie earlier, "if I catch a foul ball, we'll never have to go to another game again...except for opening day." Jamie Moyer, aka Mr. Old Man Baseball stepped up to the plate. Jamie Moyer is 48 and pitches for the Phillies. I can throw nearly as hard as him, not even joking. He throws low 80s. I can top out in the high 70s, near 80.

Anyways, he swings and there it was...a liner in front of the third base dugout, carrying into the stands, ricocheting off the front few seats, bouncing up to us, hitting the seat, rolling on the ground, and ME! I dove after it, and got it!! I raised it proudly like everyone does when they catch their first foul...awesome awesome feeling!

The Astros lost, no surprise...but the game was a memorable one for me. Thank you old man Jamie Moyer...I respect your 48 year old swing...and your liner behind third base!

Go Away Sun!!...& Opening Day with the 'Stros

GO AWAY SUN! I heard that being yelled a few times...

Anyways, it was awesome to go to another opening day, our 4th in a row for the Astros. No surprise, they keep losing! That's why I predicted them to do nothing this year, except kept the NL Central Cellar warm! Bunch of benchwarmers!

Deb and I arrived at 545 or so and it was blazing heat! Everyone was there already...JR, Spicer, Brian, Louis, and Luis...you could see the misery on their faces! It was HOT and it's not even the summer! Brian and Spicer were all over the product placement with their Papa John boxes (photo above).

They had the dome open so they could have paratroopers fly in and land on the outfield, it was pretty cool.

All in all, baseball's back, so it's awesome. Texas heat, not so awesome! Astros and awesome can't be used in a sentence, except this one. This is going to be a looong summer for Astros fans! Too bad, I'm an Indians fan!!!

Indians win World Series in 2010! Plus more bold predictions...

Well I don't like to post too much baseball here, as who cares to read my crazy thoughts...but as the season opens tonight, I'm going to go ahead and make some predictions for the year...

Regular Season:
NL
Central - Cardinals (90-72)
East - Phillies (95-67)
West - Rockies (90-72
Wild Card - Reds (88-74)
AL
Central - Indians (98-64)
East - Rays (90-72)
West - Rangers (94-66)
Wild Card - Twins (96-66)

Division Series:
NLDS: Rockies over Cardinals, Reds over Phillies
ALDS: Indians over Rangers, Rays over Twins

Championship Series:
NLCS: Rockies over Reds
ALCS: Indians over Rays

World Series:
Indians over Rockies in 6 games...

That's my bold prediction, the Indians win it all in 2010, first WS since 1948!!

(This would be an awesome scenario...NO Yankees, NO Red Sox, NO Braves...oh, and I'll say the Astros go 87-75)

Terence's 2010 MLB Preview...well, my "thoughts" at least

Baseball's back baby!!! I will spare everyone this year and limit my baseball blogs. I tried last year to start my own blog, the short-lived "Terence Babbles Baseball." Just like Speed 2, it was well-hyped but not a success. (In my personal opinion my blog and Speed 2 were GOLD!) Anyways, spring training is ongoing, the free agent class is thinning, and opening day seats are all set (for the Astros...4th year in a row, not my World Series favorite, Cleveland)!

Yes, my pick for the World Series is the Cleveland Indians. Granted I'm probably one of the few people that would say this...but as they are my favorite and most loved team, what kind of fan would I be if I didn't say the Indians?? I have been following the website mlbtraderumors.com since last year when my friend Owen sent it to me...and I was instantly hooked! It doesn't only cover the rumors, but all the transactions too! For me, it's the best. They did a spread on the Indians offseason moves last month...Cleveland's Offseason in Review. Not sure things like "the Indians' winter hammered home the fact that they're in full rebuilding mode" or "the Indians' veteran sell-off began last summer and should continue in 2010" really look promising for my prediction, but I'm holding to it!

There's been plenty of Cinderella stories throughout sports...why not Cleveland? It's been a long 62 years since their last championship! Prediction 91-71, 1st Place in AL Central. Toppling the Wild Card Yankees (bunch of dbags) in the Division Series, the Angels in the Championship Series, and the Cardinals in the World Series. Odds of going down like this...12,000 to 1! HA! If it does, I'm buying a lotto ticket!

As for my other teams I like to follow...the Astros and Cardinals. The Astros did nothing of substance. With a healthy team, they could be moderately successful, a few games above 0.500 or so, but I wouldn't hold my breath. They are going to be 77-85. The Cardinals did well signing Holliday long term. I'll bet they continue to succeed and see them going 90-72 this year...heading to a frustrating loss in the World Series to the Indians.

Oh that was fun...can't wait for the season to start! Baseball is back and I'm ready for it!!

Baseball 2009...Nightmare is more like it!

I know Debbie said the blog is not for baseball conversations, but who cares, I'm going to vent today!

With the baseball season winding down I am usually saddened come the end of September. Typically it means my days of going to games is over, with the slight chance of going to some postseason games. This year it didn't matter because my favorite team and hometown team decided to not show up to play all summer long!

As of last night, the Indians were an impressive 61-91! That is impressive, 30 games UNDER .500! As of Thursday night they had lost 11 games in a row! Wow. What a season.

It doesn't get much better down in H-town, where the Astros are sitting 5th in the NL Central, having just lost 9 in a row, and a whopping 17.5 games behind division leading St Louis! But let's rewind two months, on July 23rd, the Astros were only 1.5 games behind! In the course of two months they handed the Cardinals 16 games in the standings and effectively all their pride.

Looks like I will need to be more supportive of Debbie's hometown team...I mean the Cardinals are all set to clinch their postseason spot, we're shopping for tickets for games before the wedding, and they are all happy in the midwest.

Too bad this year sucked for my teams. My record this year is unimpressive. I went to the Cleveland-Houston game at the end of Spring Training...Cleveland lost. Then hit 7 games during the Astros regular season...lost every one until the last game I went to. What a forgetful season for my teams.

Oh well, as the Cubs fans have been saying since 1908, "maybe next year." Too bad Indians fans, like myself, have been saying the same thing since 1948...we're not all that much better! :-)

Stick a fork in 'em, the Indians are done!

What a disappointing year it is for people in Washington, they have the Nationals who are just terrible, or in Pittsburgh where they've traded nearly every opening day starter away, but not Cleveland right? WRONG! They traded away Ryan Garko the other day and now Cliff Lee, their ace. Go figure I'll have to wait one more year (at least) to see the Indians try for a ring. Another year where they are touted as being the best in the AL Central down the tubes... I guess it was meant to be since we'll be on our honeymoon during the World Series. :-)

Maybe the Astros? I won't jinx them, but they've been playing some great ball of late. I'm in for at least 2 games next week. Maybe they will win their first game I will attend...they have lost every game I've been to all year!

I'll try and update wedding and honeymoon later. Honeymoon plans have really started coming together. Wedding isn't that far away!!!

Interesting Baseball Statistic (from SI and WSJ)

Did you know that there are only 26 baseball players and managers in Major League Baseball (currently) that have college degrees! I read this in Sports Illustrated (from a Wall Street Journal poll) a few weeks back and thought I'd share.

Just a side note, I find it funny that only 1 major leaguer is the product of Florida Tech...and I believe he IS one of the 26. So good for you, Tim Wakefield! That's nearly 4%! He also was the oldest pitcher selected for the first time to an All Star Game. Perhaps that means us Panthers bloom later in our careers? Hmm...

Here is a link to the article: CLICK HERE

Check out the graph of the "brainiest" teams. I like how Atlanta is last. My mom is one that always roots against them, so I'm sure she'll be pleased!

50th Birthday, Wedding Stuff, & All Star Fanfest

Last weekend we headed up to St Louis to celebrate Debbie's mom and aunt's 50th birthday! Debbie and her sister did an amazing job planning, decorating, and more for the event! I'll leave the details and photos for Debbie to blog...

We also took care of wedding stuff, including doing our menu tasting for our reception. I think we were impressed by nearly all our preliminary selections...and narrowed it down to some great dishes. One more thing we took care of was our wedding cake fillings, icings, etc. I can't say I'll ever get to eat enough wedding cake!

Then on Sunday it seemingly was for me. We headed to the America's Center in downtown St Louis for the All Star Fanfest, part of the MLB All Star Game celebrations. There was so much there from Hall of Famer's signing autographs (like Harmon Killebrew and Tony Perez, for instance), a travelling HOF exhibit, interactive baseball games, and more. It was pretty sweet. We didn't have all day to spend there as we all head home that evening, but we got a few hours of fun in. We did the speed pitch (including Debbie, her cousins Robbie and Bryan, her aunt Pat, and myself). Debbie and Pat threw in the 30s and 40s, Bryan in the 50s, and Robbie and I in the 70s. I don't know where it came from, but somehow I still have 78 mph in my arm! That is off my once 89 mph throw from my high school days, but wasn't all that bad for my 27 year old arm.

Ditto to the wedding photos, the party photos, and now the Fanfest photos...Deb has them! She is off in Denver this weekend (remember this is our busy busy month!)... I did find one photo taken at the State Farm Homerun Derby exhibit, check it out:
